A useful audience definition tells you who might matter. A useful occasion tells you when the category matters to them, what they need and how they could act. Connecting those decisions is the thinking behind Occasion-Commerce.

Occasion-Commerce is a concept coined by 2plus3 to connect a relevant occasion with a practical route towards action or purchase.

Start with the occasion

We use Occasion-Commerce to describe a planning approach that connects an identifiable need, moment or context with audience, place and availability. Its job is to make the next action relevant and achievable.

An occasion is richer than a time slot. “Friday evening” is a planning input. “A group organising a get-together, agreeing what to bring and finding somewhere nearby to buy it” describes a problem that creative, media and an experience can help solve.

Bring availability into the journey early

Relevance loses value when someone cannot complete the next step. A message can fit the moment while pointing to a distant store, an unavailable product or a complicated ordering flow. Availability belongs in the design from the outset.

Map the moment, the barrier, the available option and the action. The action could be opening Maps, exploring a bundle, starting a WhatsApp conversation, entering a promotion or completing an order. Choose what serves the need.

Round makes the idea tangible

Round is our built occasion-led commerce app, preparing for a pilot rollout. It starts with a social occasion and connects the group with relevant bundles, participating merchants and an ordering journey. That is one application of the concept.

The pilot still needs to validate merchant participation, fulfilment, conversion and commercial viability. The existence of a usable app shows that we can build the journey. It does not yet prove adoption or sales impact.

Apply it across the three connected solutions

Creator-to-Commerce can connect a persuasive piece of content with a useful occasion and retail opportunity. Experience-to-Action can extend a sponsorship moment into participation and a relevant response. Reach-to-Retail can bring location and availability into a broad-reach plan.

2plus3 Intel is being developed to strengthen the audience, movement and place intelligence behind these decisions. Each brief still depends on the data, coverage and measurement that can actually be supported.

Measure the opportunity you created

Select the evidence that matches the action: product exploration, qualified store search, offer claim, visit, redemption or purchase where suitable data exists. Keep the steps separate in reporting so friction remains visible.

The practical test is simple: did we identify a real occasion, remove a barrier and make an appropriate action easier? That is where the concept earns its usefulness.

Build an Occasion-Commerce brief

  1. Name the consumer occasion in one specific sentence.
  2. Identify the need or barrier at that moment.
  3. Confirm which relevant products, locations or offers are available.
  4. Choose the shortest useful route to action.
  5. Define the event and evidence needed to evaluate it.

Put it to work

Which occasions are most likely to create category demand?

Measurement methods and product availability are agreed for each brief. Examples describe possible journeys; commercial outcomes require suitable evidence.
